I always wake up on December 26th with an eagerness for some austerity. My problem is I can easily overdo it on Christmas. I overdo it on the food, drinks, decorations, gifts, all of it.
During this last week of the year, as you’re thinking about goals and resolutions, consider mixing some form of self-denial into them. Sure, most resolutions do require a form of self-discipline, but I think an extra touch of the ascetic can be good for the soul.
For me, I’m staying up an hour later, depriving myself of sleep, to focus on writing and reading more in 2016. It’s a big experiment. I’m excited about it. What’s it going to be for you?
