The Upside of a Disciplined Life

It’s easy to dwell on the downside of discipline. In the moment, discipline is dreadful. It hurts. It causes strain. It taxes us in more ways than one, and it’s just not that fun. That is why so many people steer clear of it.

One wise 1st-century writer put it like this:

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest… for those who have been trained by it.”

So while discipline repels at first brush, it rewards the ones who stick with it.

Some of the rewards I have discovered are:

     • Joy
     • Satisfaction
    • Self-Respect
    • Confidence

These are just a few; there are others.

The next time you find yourself in the valley of decision regarding whether to follow through on a discipline or not, don’t forget to think about the upside.

Yep, it’s going to be hard. And you’re right, it’s going to be dull drudgery. But, upon completion, you will reap a satisfying harvest and then some.
