In J.R.R. Tolkien’s, The Lord of the Rings, Samwise Gamgee is the most underrated hero out of all those in the fellowship.
Of course, you can’t beat Gandalf, and it’s hard to trump Aragorn. And how about Legolas and his bow and arrow? The story, to be sure, is chocked full of heroes.
But there’s no way Frodo Baggins fulfills his quest without the presence and constant companionship of Samwise the Brave.
You may not have noticed, but if you go back and watch the films, you’ll see that Sam is the one who carries nearly all the equipment on their long distance journey. This foreshadows the moment in the final scene when, Sam on his back, literally carries Frodo up Mount Doom.
Sam’s companionship helps Frodo fulfill his quest and Sam completes his own in the process.
Companionship isn’t just for hobbits. We humans should also have companions for this journey called life. Just remember, we’re made by the relationships we make. Those closest to us will define us. Choose your friends wisely and your companions even wiser.
