Do More with Your Learning

Cultivation to the mind is as necessary as food to the body.
— Cicero

I read and listen to books quite a bit. I really enjoy it, but I find my retention rate isn't where I'd like it to be. I know more cultivation is what I need.

Practicing different cultivation methods with the same material will increase your learning retention.

Reading: Don't be afraid to reread something over and over again. As we all know, repetition is the mother of all learning.

Writing: When you want to make sure you remember something you've just read, take a 5 minute break and write out a brief summary. Make sure it's in your own words. Don't just copy the quote down, repackage it. You'll also boost retention if you can find a way to connect it to your life.

Teaching: Take what you've written and go teach it to someone over coffee or lunch. Another word for teaching is sharing. Make it an impromptu thing. Say, "Hey, I learned something cool the other day."... and then dive right in.

If you want more of you’re learning to stick, do more with it.
