Far from Withering

The old that is strong does not wither.
— J.R.R. Tolkien

There’s a storyline that I bought into at some point when I was a kid: The older you get, the less effective and less relevant you become.

I know now that that’s totally bogus. I’m sure I picked up this storyline from my life experiences with authority figures.

Author, George Clason famously said, “Too often does youth think that age knows only the wisdom of days gone by, and therefore profits not.”

Throughout my twenties and early thirties, I encountered older folks who were filled to the brim with effectiveness, wisdom, and strength. I always left their presence thinking, “I hope I can be like that one day!”

Their secret is simple. They’ve made growth a habit. It’s been something they’ve practiced their entire lives. And because they never stopped, the fruit never did either. Far from withering, they are a sight to behold.
